Each OS version has it's own "hack procedure". I think that it's possible to run El Capitan (OS 10.11).again via a hack. Sounds like this computer is currently running Yosmite (OS 10.10). Since this computer is in "unofficial territory".it's really up to the user to address issues on their own.because it's possible to turn the computer into a "brick" if these hack's are applied incorrectly.or if info mentioned here is incorrect, misunderstood, or applied incorrectly. It is possible via "hacks" to run newer OS versions on this model Mac Pro (which is why the boot screen issue that started the thread is not seen). "Apple Official" newest OS for this computer ("latest compatible version") is OS 10.7.5 (first released July, 2011). I think that this was a patch to Yosemite, not an update to El Capitan (?) 20 minutes later it rebooted and I heard the startup chime but no boot display at all. The problems started when I did a check for updates (Yosemite) and it installed an update. Given that I never turned on a mac before I didn't know what to expect so just logged in using the administrator account and had a bit of a play. On getting it home I got it to boot a couple of times, *but* I don't ever recall seeing a boot screen or "apple logo" for any kind - it went straight to the login screen.
